The history of Agriculture began thousands of years ago. The Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan's economy and is an inevitable and integral part which ensures food security and economic up rise of the country. About 68% of the population is engaged in farming directly or indirectly through production, processing and distribution of major agriculture commodities. The key role of Agriculture Research is to augment knowledge and upturn farming technology. It elevates the understanding of the collaboration and interdependence between production systems and farming communities. This requires ample interdisciplinary approach to identify a problem, analyses to find a solution. Wheat, Maize, Sugarcane, Cotton and Rice are the most important crops grown in Pakistan. The performance of these five is crucial for the overall performance of National economy. The scientists of Agriculture Research System of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa actively seek to discover procedures that will increase crop yields, improve farmland productivity, reduce losses due to diseases and insects, evolve climate smart cultivars, and increase overall food quality. Researchers look for modes to increase the profits of poor farming community of KP and to protect the environment. Agricultural Research has completed successfully over 100 years of services to the farming community of this region by evolving various varieties in field and horticultural crops. Our scientists are engaged always to develop farmers-oriented problems research projects. Through Agriculture Research, the standard of living we enjoy today will further be improved, Insha’Allah.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Agricultural Research started in 1908 at Tarnab, Peshawar by the British Government which was further strengthened and expanded to the entire Province over the years by formation and establishment of new research stations and institutes. Now a network of 15 Agriculture Research Institutes/Stations with a couple of sub-stations is functioning in the Province under the supervision of Director General Agriculture Research. The Outreach Directorate, led by Senior Director Outreach promote and transfer improved technology to the end users. Research institutes/stations were split into two categories, one with the mandate of research on multiple disciplines i.e., Agricultural Research Institutes like Tarnab, Dera Ismail Khan; Research station Mingora and Agricultural Research Station Baffa, Mansehra falls under this category. The other category is of commodity institutes/stations like Cereal Crops Research Institute, Pirsabak, Sugar Crops Research Institute, Mardan. In 1986, Govt. of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa according to an agreement signed with US-AID under the Project Transformation and Integration of Provincial Agricultural Network (TIPAN), merged the Agricultural Research Wing of Agriculture Department with the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, which was later called as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural Research System. This arrangement was made with the aim to enhance quality of agriculture education and research according to the need of the farming community. This system worked under the administration of KP Agricultural University, Peshawar and financed by the Govt. of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In 2005, the Provincial Assembly at that time passed a resolution and repeal the act and brought back the Agricultural Research System to the status of an attached department of the Government. Meanwhile, The Directorate General Agricultural Research Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was established in 1986.
